Paweł Mackiewicz is a professor on the Faculty of Biotechnology at the University of Wrocław in Poland. He obtained all his academic degrees, a BSc in microbiology (1996), MSc in general biology (1996), MSc in microbiology (1997), and PhD (2000) as well as habilitation (2004) in biological sciences-genetics with specialty in bioinformatics at the University of Wrocław. Since 2012, he is a head of Department of Bioinformatics and Genomics at the Faculty of Biotechnology. Prof. Mackiewicz is an author and co-author of about 200 scientific publications and more than 350 conference presentations. He has received numerous awards for his scientific achievements from the Foundation for Polish Science, the Polish Genetics Society, the Education Minister, and the President of the University of Wrocław. Prof. Mackiewicz is a member of the Polish Genetics Society and the Polish Bioinformatics Society. He is involved in many interdisciplinary research projects in the field of bioinformatics, genomics, phylogenetics and molecular evolution. His research interests focus on endosymbiosis, genetic code optimization and evolution, computer simulation of genome evolution, as well as phylogeny and evolution at the level of genes, proteins, genomes and organisms including ancient DNA samples. He is also interested in studies of various morphological and paleontological data, in which he applies advanced statistical analyses, ecological niche modelling, morphometric geometrics and phylogenetic comparative methods.
